Foods That Help Fight Lung Cancer

Foods That Help Fight Lung Cancer

There is a lot of research out there and information concerning a diet that can help the body fight against ever developing harmful and deadly cancers, including lung cancer. However, this information does not do too much good for people who have already been diagnosed with lung cancer. If you have already been diagnosed with lung cancer, then you need to find out what a good lung cancer diet is that can help you battle the disease and increase the chances of defeating the disease.

It can be hard to know exactly what a lung cancer diet should look like as the factors depend on what type of lung cancer treatments you are receiving, as well as the type of lung cancer you have, like non-small-cell lung carcinoma. For instance, your diet will be different if you are being treated with chemotherapy than if you were being treated with radiation therapy. This is because the different treatment options affect our bodies in different ways, meaning each requires different vitamins and minerals for sustenance. However, there are some studies that have shown that there are a few foods available that can improve overall health while battling lung cancer and provide patients with better odds at beating the cancer.

Below is a list of specific foods that have natural chemicals in them that can help with lung cancer cells in the body and stop it from spreading to other areas of the body.

1. Pears
A recent study done on lung cancer cells in a lab showed that pears had a remarkable effect on the cancer cells. Pears contain a powerful natural chemical known as phloretin. When the phloretin connects with the cancer cells, they start to attack them. Phloretin in pears has also been known to reduce the amount of fibrosis in the lungs that cancer patients may experience as a side effect of radiation therapy directed at the lungs.

2. Green tea
Though green tea is a beverage, it falls into the food category and is one that has been seen to work to attack cancer that occurs in the lungs. Not only can it help prevent lung cancer from forming, but green tea contains powerful ingredients like theaflavin and EGCG which has been found to make a chemotherapy drug, known as cisplatin which is the chemo most often used in lung cancer patients, more potent. This means that green tea helps make the medicine more effective at its job of eliminating lung cancer cells.

3. Salmon
People who are battling lung cancer show positive results when they introduce more vitamin D into their diets. Extra vitamin D3 in the body has been shown to keep the lung cancer from growing or spreading. Since salmon is a food that is extremely high in vitamin D, eating lots of it can help keep the lung cancer in one centralized location instead of spreading throughout the lungs and possibly into other parts of the body.

4. Other foods for lung cancer
Other foods that have been shown to help patients who already have lung cancer include:

  • Ginger
  • Capers
  • Curry
  • Berries
  • Carrots
  • Red grape juice
  • Tomato sauce

These foods certainly are not a cure-all for lung cancer, but they are definitely things that patients can add to their diet to help fight the disease away as the medications do their job as well.
