Home Remedies to Banish Fleas
Parasites are insects that live on another creature and is dependent upon that creature for survival. The most common parasite found on dogs and cats are fleas. While often annoying, fleas are quite common among household pets and can be easily repelled or removed. Rather than spend money on store bought products that may contain chemicals that could be harmful to your pets and family, consider some alternative and more natural remedies that can help to control a flea infestation:
1. Grab the dish detergent
This do-it-yourself flea trap can be quickly and easily put together to help control a flea problem. Simply combine some dish soap with some warm water and place the mixture in a bowl. Then, place the bowl in an area of the house where you feel the most flea activity is occurring and leave overnight. The solutions attracts fleas and traps them within the bowl. Then, simply clean the bowl and repeat the process as necessary. In addition, dish soap can also be used in DIY flea baths for your dog or cat to help control flea problems.
2. Common household flea deterrents
There are a few flea control methods that can easily be created by rummaging through your kitchen cabinets or pantry. First, vacuuming is the best way to get rid of fleas as they tend to live in the fibers of your furniture, rugs and bedding. For top effectiveness, sprinkle baking soda over all the infested areas and use a scrub brush to rub the powder deep into the fibers. Then, vacuum thoroughly and empty any contents into a bag and discard immediately. In addition to baking powder, fine salt can also be effective in removing fleas from carpets. Sprinkle within the carpet and let sit for a day or two. The salt will dehydrate adult fleas and eventually kill them. After a couple days, vacuum the rugs and empty the contents outside immediately.
3. Natural flea sprays
To provide an added layer of protection, try applying a flea spray to the areas after vacuuming. For a natural flea spray, grab the vinegar, lemon juice, water, and (if you have it) witch hazel. Combine in a spray bottle and then, apply the spray onto any surface that has fabric that may be housing fleas. The spray should combat your flea problem without causing any harm to your pets or family.
4. Prevent fleas from finding a host
The best and most effective way to prevent a flea problem within the home is to avoid fleas outside the home. Flea prevention can be achieved by including certain types of plants throughout your landscape. By using these plants throughout your front and backyard, you can create a natural way to repel fleas that also adds beauty to your home. Plants such as lavender, chrysanthemums, penny royal, and spearmint are all highly fragrant and provide a great way to repel fleas from infesting your pet and possibly entering your home.
