An auto repair shop or garage is where automobiles are repaired by mechanics or technicians.

These automobile repair shops are owned independently or are a part of a franchise. They are certified by their manufacturers to perform repairs under warranty. There are also specialty repair shops that deal with certain parts like the body, transmission, exhaust system, mufflers, brakes, air conditioner, automotive glass installation, wheel alignment, etc. Various specialized shops have various facilities and infrastructure.

There are many shops which offer different services like doorstep repair, delivery of auto parts of classic cars and late model, and other repair services. Automobiles require regular maintenance as stated in the manual; this service scheduled keeps the vehicle in top condition. Repairs are carried out when the scheduled service finds a problem that needs to be fixed. Where you take your vehicle depends on the type of work that it requires. You can go to a repair shop, franchise, or dealer as long as it is covered under warranty.

Auto body repair
Some garages or auto repair shops offer bodywork and mechanical repairs. Some offer bodywork repairs such as fixing dents, scratches, scuffs, and damages by collisions. Many also offer repair of dents but without the paint.

Auto glass repair
There are repair shops which specialize in auto glass repair. They repair or replace shattered glass, cracks, and chips. This can be done to rear windows, quarter glass, car windows, and windshields. The damage may be caused by vandalism, theft, fallen trees, wild animals, stones, etc.

Mechanics
Auto mechanics follow their own career path which depends on their experience and training. Mechanics work in service and repair of the vehicle’s electrical and mechanical components. Auto mechanics are found in body repair shops, dealer workshops, or service centers.

Service technicians perform routine servicing of the automobiles which includes checking fluid and oil levels. They are replaced if recommended by the manufacturer. They also check the mechanical and electrical components and diagnose and repair problems.

Diagnostic technicians
Their duties overlap with those of service technicians. They play an important role in the workshop.

Brake and transmission technicians
These technicians specialize in maintaining the transmission and brakes. They ensure vehicle safety and are associated with electronic steering. The transmission specialist checks the efficiency of the steering component and power train. They need to have knowledge of electronic systems.

Body repair technicians
They help replace damaged and worn components or repair them. If there is extensive damage, they have to make sure it is economical to replace or repair the component. Additionally, they also repair dents and scratches.

Vehicle refinishers
After the body is repaired, there are some who are specialized in refinishing techniques. They work in spray booths and respray/refinish older cars.
